BOOKS ON STEWARDSHIP

Roxy the Ritzy Camel
by Anthony DeStefano (ages 3-7)

In this colorful and creative retelling of the parable of the rich young ruler, Roxy the camel must give away all her fancy possessions to fit through the entrance of a lush land. Discuss with your children the difference between the joy Roxy found in her stuff and the joy she found through generosity. Then, read the story of Jesus and the rich young ruler together (Mark 10:17-27).

The Pine Tree Parable
by Liz Curtis Higgs (ages 2-6)

With Scripture references on every page, this story of generosity teaches about God’s heart for the poor and the importance of using what you have to help others. Discuss each Bible verse with your children as you read, especially what the story of Jesus’ life teaches us about generosity (2 Corinthians 8:9).

Ronnie Wilson’s Gift
by Francis Chan (ages 4-8)

At church, Ronnie learns about Jesus’ gift of salvation. He is so amazed by Jesus’ generosity, he wants to give Jesus a gift, too. After reading, discuss with your children what Jesus meant when he said, “Whatever you did for the least of these … you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). In what ways can they be generous to God by being generous to others?

What is Given from the Heart
by Patricia McKissack (ages 5-9)

A boy and his mother learn the power of kindness and the joy of giving when they fall on hard times and are supported by their church family. After reading, discuss what the Bible says about carrying one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2), and list all the people you know who could use a little generosity, whether it’s a kind note, a helping hand, or a generous gift.

One Hen: How One Small Loan Made a Big Difference
by Katie Smith Milway (ages 7-10)

Inspired by real events, this book tells the story of a young boy from Ghana who turns a small loan into a thriving business that supports his family and his community. Introduce children to the world of microloans, and discuss how God tells us those who can be trusted with little can also be trusted with much (Luke 16:10).
